Hybrid inverter is a kind of intelligent inverter. The hybrid inverter stores the excess solar energy in the battery system and takes it out to use it when needed. Its function is not very different from that of a grid-connected solar inverter, the difference is that it has a wide range of operation modes. Compared to a normal on-grid inverter, it has the ability to store the electricity generated, so in a hybrid system using a hybrid inverter, the peers will all have a certain number of batteries as energy storage. At the same time, the hybrid inverter can not only store energy, but also operate without batteries like an on-grid inverter, while exporting the excess solar energy to the utility grid for revenue, which is the same function as an on-grid solar inverter. Thus, a hybrid inverter is simply a combination of a grid-tied inverter and an off-grid inverter.

Most hybrid inverters can be programmed to operate in four different modes

1. Grid-connected mode - Functions similar to a regular grid-connected solar inverter. When operating, it can feed the generated electricity into the grid and can choose to generate its own surplus power and feed it into the grid, or it can choose to feed the full amount into the grid. No energy storage module is used in this mode.
2. Hybrid mode - In this mode, the energy storage module is used to store excess solar energy during the day. When there is no sunlight at night, it is used to increase self-sufficiency.
3. Standby mode - functions like a normal solar inverter when connected to the grid, and automatically switches to standby power mode when the grid is interrupted.
4. Off-grid mode - operates much like an off-grid inverter and uses excess solar energy to charge batteries and power loads without being connected to the grid.
